On the 29th, amidst last year's nationwide record-low number of newborns and total fertility rate, Chungcheongbuk-do distinguished itself as the only region reporting a rise in both. According to Statistics Korea's vital statistics for 2023, Chungcheongbuk-do was the only province among 17 cities and provinces to register a 1.7% YoY increase (128 babies) in the number of newborns, totaling 7,580 babies. A total of 229,970 babies were born nationwide in 2023. Compared to the previous year, this figure has seen a 7.7% decrease (△19,216 babies), across all other cities and provinces. * Percent change ranked by cities and provinces: Chungcheongbuk-do (1.7%), Jeollanam-do (△0.8%), Incheon (△5.6%) Moreover, despite the nation's total fertility rate dropping by 0.06 from 2022 to 0.72 births in 2023, Chungcheongbuk-do saw a rise from 0.87 in 2022 by 0.02.
