- Providing medically vulnerable people with medical expenses
amounting to a maximum of KRW 3 million On Mon, Jan. 9, Chungcheongbuk-do (Governor Kim Young-hwan) has begun a pilot deferred payment program for medical expenses, a representative project of the 8th civil election to further benefit its citizens. To facilitate the promotion of the project, Chungcheongbuk-do held a briefing session on Dec. 29 to improve deficiencies. The pilot deferred payment program for medical expenses is a virtuous-cycle medical welfare system in which the province pays for the medical expenses of the underprivileged in health care who are afraid of receiving timely treatment due to the burden of spending large amounts of money for medical expenses; the program allows patients to make payments in long-term installments without interest, helping out patients in need. Low-income groups, basic livelihood security program recipients, war veterans, and people with disabilities, who are aged 65 or older, residing in the province are eligible for the project. They can get benefits if they undergo dental implant, knee/hip artificial joints/spine, or cardio/cerebrovascular surgery (procedure). * Those who are owing financial institutions stipulated in the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act and those who are credit delinquent or currently has debt according to Korea Credit Information Services are not eligible for the project. Through the project, a patient can take out loans amounting to KRW 0.5 million to a maximum of KRW 3 million and pay in installments with no interest for up to three years. In addition, the province provides interest subsidy to help medically vulnerable people to take out loans and receive financial aid. The deferred payment program for medical expenses can be registered through 12 general hospital-level medical institutions and 68 clinics/hospitals including dental clinics. The province plans to increase the number of partnering medical institutions for medically vulnerable people through constant promotion of the program not to cause any inconveniences for treatment. In addition, it will make efforts to revise the related municipal ordinance in January and resolve blind spot in the medical sector by enlarging the targets of the program to all citizens aged 65 or older, all ages of basic livelihood security recipients, war veterans and people with disabilities. Governor Kim Young-hwan said, “I really appreciate those who have proactively participated in the pilot program including medical institutions and Nonghyup officials.” He also added, “By constantly revamping the project, we will help medically vulnerable people to receive treatment in a timely manner.” |
