The general meeting vote of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) took place on the 12th at the Steigenberger Wiltcher's hotel in Brussels, Belgium. At around 12:30 p.m. local time (around 8:30 p.m., Korea time), the FISU Acting President Leonz Eder announced that the host of the 2027 Summer World University Games is Chungcheong, Mega City in Korea. Chungcheong Province won the bid over North Carolina (USA) and became the first to host an international sports event. This upcoming event will be the fourth sports event to be held in Korea, following the 1997 Winter Universiade in Muju and Jeonju, the 2023 Summer Universiade in Daegu, and the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju. Including governor Kim Young-hwan and chairperson Hwang Young-ho, the Chungcheong Megacity Bid Committee (CMBC) was established by the governors of Chungcheong, chairpersons of the provincial assembly, president and officials from the Korea Sports & Olympic Committee, officials from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korea University Sports Board, and press corps. Until the last minute of the general meeting of FISU, the CMBC carried out active promotional activities at the PR booth prepared for Chungcheong Megacity and conference hall in Brussels, Belgium. The last presentation of Chungcheong Province for winning the bid to host the 2027 Summer World University Games was carried out for 45 minutes, including a 30-minute presentation and a 15-minute Q&A session, that attracted attention of the members of the FISU executive committee. Through the presentation, Chungcheong Province explained the strength and main concept of the event in Chungcheong, including the vision of Chungcheong, blueprints of the Megacity, education & culture, IT, environmental conservation, sustainability, and low-cost & high-efficiency event planning. The video prepared by the CMBC conveyed the message of the Chungcheong Province's powerful will to host this event. According to the officials of the delegation, Chungcheong's achievement in hosting this event was possible because of the strongly determined will of the four cities and provinces of Chungcheong region, and the elaborated strategy and preparations of the bidding committee. After the announcement, four governors of Chungcheong Province signed the host city agreement with the presidents of FISU on the site. Governor Kim Young-Hwan said, “I send my deep gratitude to all the Chungcheong-do Province residents who helped to lead the bid for the 2027 Summer World University Games.” Governor Kim also expressed hopes and ambitions of hosting this upcoming event: “We will strive to prepare a safe sports event and take this as an opportunity to promote the beautiful Lake Park Renaissance of Chungcheongbuk-do Province across the world. We will also work hard to overcome the shortage of stadiums in Chungcheongbuk-do Province and expand sports infrastructure and business. This will be Chungcheong's chance to reunite and make a big leap together.” |
