Closing of the 2021 Online World Martial Arts Masterships, “See You Next Year”
-Great anticipation for the 2023 Ulaanbaatar World Martial Arts Masterships- The 2021 Online World Martial Arts Masterships came to a close after five days of competition that brought the world back together. On November 2 at 8 PM, the closing ceremony was held both on-site at the Grand Plaza Cheongju Hotel and through the online platform (http://online.mastership.org). The World Martial Arts Masterships Committee (WMC) Convention was also held during the event, and a flurry of online congratulatory messages came through from the athletes and committee members congratulating Mongolia as the host of the 2023 Ulaanbaatar World Martial Arts Masterships. At the closing ceremony, Secretary General Sungil Baek of the WMC said, “Despite major global sporting events being disrupted due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we have managed to host this event successfully and created an opportunity for international martial artists to rub shoulders with one another, not to mention that this is the world’s first online sporting event. Taking a hybrid approach that combines in-person and virtual elements, we successfully executed this event, and we ask for your continued interest and support so that the World Martial Arts Mastership can solidify its position as a global sporting event in the post-COVID era as well.” The closing remarks were followed by a video where Secretary General Seung Kim of the Korean National Martial Arts Masterships Committee (NMC) declared the closing of the event. The video featured highlights of each sport during the five-day competition and ended with a “see you next year” message from Korean martial artists. Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning that the Online World Martial Arts Masterships may continue to be held even in the post-COVID era, thanks to its complete online platform and positive feedback. According to a spokesperson from WMC, the 2021 Online World Martial Arts Masterships, as the world’s first online sporting event, set a milestone in the history of global sports and martial arts by bringing people back together around the globe amid the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, Korea’s IT technologies and international sports associations played an integral role in successfully executing the event.
